Florida made the largest move in the latest Associated Press Top 25, climbing 13 places to No. 8 after beating then-No. 4 Mississippi. Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame remained first, second and third.
At a glance
- Florida rose from No. 21 to No. 8, its first top-10 ranking since 2021.
- Texas stayed No. 1, followed by Georgia and Notre Dame.
- Oklahoma State, Boise State, UCLA and Kentucky entered the poll.
- Penn State, Michigan, Louisville and Texas A&M dropped out.
Why Florida moved so far
The Gators’ 52-28 win over Mississippi gave voters a clear result against a top-five opponent. The AP poll moved Florida up 13 positions, the program’s highest ranking since 2020. That was the biggest upward move in this week’s poll.
A ranking is a weekly judgment by the AP’s media voting panel, not a championship selection or a guaranteed playoff position. The result matters because it changes how Florida’s next games will be framed, but the ranking can move again as soon as the next poll is released.
The top of the poll
Texas held the No. 1 position after a 20-17 road win over Tennessee and received 62 first-place votes. Georgia remained No. 2, Notre Dame stayed No. 3, Miami moved to No. 4 and Ohio State rose to No. 5.
Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and BYU completed the top 10. The SEC placed 10 teams in the Top 25, the most of any conference in this poll.
Who entered and who fell out
Oklahoma State returned at No. 19, Boise State entered at No. 22, UCLA moved in at No. 23 and Kentucky joined at No. 24. Penn State, Michigan, Louisville and Texas A&M fell out after losses.
Iowa also made a notable move, reaching No. 14 after defeating Michigan on the final play. Mississippi State rose to No. 16, Oregon climbed to No. 15 and Houston reached No. 20.
What the rankings do—and do not—mean
The AP Top 25 is an influential weekly snapshot, but it is separate from the College Football Playoff selection committee’s rankings. AP voters can reward a major win immediately, while the playoff committee uses its own process later in the season.
