Raw salmon portions on a wooden cutting board, illustrating the Starfish smoked salmon recall

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. is recalling 8-ounce packages of Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a company announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday, October 16.

The recall covers frozen, vacuum-sealed salmon sold in six states. Consumers should check the UPC, lot and best-before date rather than relying on the brand name alone, because the announcement identifies one specific product configuration.

How to identify the recalled salmon

  • Product: Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced
  • Net weight: 227 grams / 8 ounces
  • Packaging: frozen, vacuum-sealed plastic package
  • UPC: 4751048940099
  • Lot: D080-148
  • Best before: November 27, 2027
  • Country of origin: Latvia

The product was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Krasnyi Oktyabr, a Brooklyn-based wholesale distributor, said it did not manufacture the salmon and has told affected customers to stop selling or distributing it and to identify remaining inventory.

What consumers should do

Consumers who have the recalled package should not eat it. The company says it can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions may be directed to Krasnyi Oktyabr at (718) 858-6720 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

No illnesses had been reported in connection with this product when the FDA posted the announcement. New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets sampling identified the potential contamination, and the distributor said it is cooperating with state officials and the FDA.

A separate Starfish seafood recall

The October 16 notice is separate from an October 9 recall involving an 8-ounce Starfish Seafood Trio containing cold-smoked salmon, halibut and trout. That earlier product carries lot D139149161-153 and a December 1, 2027 expiration date, according to the FDA. Consumers should compare the exact package, UPC or lot details against the applicable notice because the products and affected distribution lists differ.

Why Listeria is a concern

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults, people who are frail and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people can experience short-term symptoms including fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Infection during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or stillbirth, the recall notice says.

This salmon recall is separate from the 3M Scotch laminator recall reported by AskNovus. Readers can follow additional consumer-product developments in the AskNovus Shopping section.
