Updated with National Hurricane Center Advisory 36 at 2 a.m. MST Friday, October 16, 2026. Simon has weakened to a minimal tropical storm, and there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
The NHC located Simon near 20.0°N, 108.8°W, about 210 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas and 205 miles west of Cabo Corrientes. Maximum sustained winds had fallen to 40 mph, the minimum pressure was 1002 millibars, and the compact storm was moving northwest at 9 mph.
Current status: no coastal warning
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Interests in Baja California Sur should continue to monitor Simon, but the earlier hurricane watches and warnings for mainland Mexico and Las Islas Marías have ended.
A warning means hazardous conditions are expected, while a watch means they are possible. Simon’s current status is neither: no coastal watch or warning was active in Advisory 36.
What changed
- Simon weakened from a major hurricane on October 11 to a 40 mph tropical storm by early October 16.
- All coastal hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings have been discontinued.
- The NHC forecast Simon to become a post-tropical remnant low within about 24 hours and dissipate in roughly 48 hours.
- The center is expected to move northwest, passing west of the Baja California Peninsula over the weekend.
Remaining rain and surf hazards
Through early Saturday, Simon could produce 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated totals near 3 inches, over parts of Baja California Sur. Swells from the storm may continue to affect west-central Mexico and Baja California Sur, creating life-threatening surf and rip currents even though coastal tropical warnings have ended.
The storm’s tropical-storm-force winds extended only about 25 miles from the center. Moderate to strong wind shear and dry mid-level air were expected to continue weakening the circulation.
Separate new threat: Hurricane Trudy
Simon’s decline does not end Mexico’s Pacific tropical threat. Farther southeast, Hurricane Trudy rapidly intensified to Category 3, prompting a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning along a different stretch of coast.
