The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Filip Hallander in a one-for-one trade announced Wednesday by both NHL clubs.

No draft picks or retained salary were listed in the teams’ announcements. Stastney is signed through the 2026–27 season with a $1.525 million average annual value, according to Pittsburgh.

What Pittsburgh receives

Stastney, 26, is a left-shot defenseman who played 66 games split between Edmonton and Nashville in 2025–26. He set career highs with two goals, eight assists, 10 points and 63 blocked shots. The Penguins also highlighted his penalty-killing work with Nashville, where he averaged 1:27 of short-handed ice time per game.

Across four NHL seasons, Stastney has 19 points—four goals and 15 assists—in 117 regular-season games. He has also appeared in three Stanley Cup Playoff games. Nashville selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft after his time with the U.S. National Team Development Program; he later played four seasons at Notre Dame.

What Edmonton receives

Hallander, also 26, gives Edmonton a 6-foot-2 left-shot center. He recorded one goal and two assists in two games for Pittsburgh this season before the trade. Over parts of four NHL seasons, he has seven points in 18 games.

The Swedish forward has more extensive American Hockey League experience, totaling 26 goals and 36 assists in 107 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Pittsburgh originally selected him in the second round of the 2018 draft. He was traded to Toronto in 2020 and returned to the Penguins organization in 2021.

Why the deal matters

The swap addresses different roster needs without adding long-term salary complexity. Pittsburgh adds an experienced depth defenseman with penalty-killing usage, while Edmonton adds a two-way forward who produced immediately in limited NHL action this season.

Lineup placement and debut timing were not specified in the official releases. Those decisions remain subject to each team’s roster moves and coaching plans.
