Workers and vehicles on an automotive assembly line, illustrative of the Springfield truck plant

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Nearly 1,400 workers were laid off Wednesday, September 30, at the former Navistar truck plant in Springfield, delivering an immediate blow to workers and the broader Dayton-area economy.

The layoffs are large enough to erase roughly a year of job growth in the region, the Associated Press reported October 3. The plant has long been a major source of manufacturing employment in Clark County, so the effects are likely to extend to suppliers, restaurants, housing and household spending.

New owner describes a phased transition

Roshel, a Canadian manufacturer of armored vehicles that acquired the facility, said it is working to protect the current workforce and plans to more than double employment over a period of years. The company described that process as phased, not immediate.

Some displaced workers told the AP they were led to expect possible rehiring in six to 12 months. That expectation is not a guarantee. Future staffing will depend on production plans, contracts, financing and the timetable for converting the operation.

What the layoffs mean now

The short-term fact is clear: nearly 1,400 paychecks disappeared at once. State unemployment benefits, retraining programs and local job placement efforts may soften the impact, but they do not replace a confirmed manufacturing job.

The event also illustrates why national labor figures can mask severe local shocks. The September U.S. employment report showed broader trends across millions of jobs; a single closure or restructuring can still transform one community’s labor market. See AskNovus’ analysis of the September 2026 U.S. jobs report for national context.

Roshel’s longer-term growth plan could eventually restore some or all of the lost employment, but readers should distinguish that stated goal from jobs that currently exist. No future hiring total should be treated as final until the company posts positions or announces a production schedule.
