Jackson died Monday, Oct. 5, three days after his birthday, according to a statement shared by his family on his official social media account. The family did not disclose a cause of death.
The announcement remembered Jackson as both a “legendary voice” and a generous person whose songs became part of listeners’ love stories, celebrations and personal memories. Funeral or memorial arrangements had not been announced as of Wednesday.
A breakthrough built on ballads
Born in Harlem, Jackson began singing gospel in church before working on New York’s club circuit and joining the band Mystic Merlin. His solo breakthrough came with the 1985 album Rock Me Tonight, a platinum-selling release led by “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” and “You Are My Lady.”
Those songs established Jackson’s signature: a polished tenor, careful phrasing and a direct emotional style that made him one of the era’s most recognizable romantic singers.
His debut brought Grammy nominations for best new artist and best male R&B vocal performance. The 1986 follow-up Just Like the First Time also went platinum and extended his run of chart success.
Ten R&B No. 1 singles
Jackson ultimately placed 10 singles at No. 1 on the R&B chart and released 15 studio albums. His hits included “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “Nice ’N’ Slow” and “Do Me Again.”
He also recorded with artists including Melba Moore and Irene Cara, remaining active long after his peak commercial years. His influence endured through quiet-storm radio, adult R&B playlists and generations of singers who followed the vocal template he helped popularize.
Kidney-disease advocacy
In 2024, Jackson publicly said he was living with kidney disease. He later worked with the National Kidney Foundation to encourage awareness and testing. His family’s statement did not connect that diagnosis to his death, and no cause should be inferred.
Tributes from fans and fellow musicians focused on Jackson’s voice and the intimacy of his recordings. His best-known songs were built less around spectacle than conversation—an approach that allowed listeners to hear their own relationships in the music.
