BEIJING — September 30, 2026: China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index rose to 50.1 in September from 49.8 in August, returning to expansion after two consecutive months below the 50-point threshold.
The National Bureau of Statistics released the survey on September 30. A reading above 50 signals that activity expanded from the previous month; it does not measure the amount of output or establish that every part of the manufacturing economy grew.
Production improved, but the recovery was uneven
The official production sub-index increased to 51.7, up 1.3 percentage points from August. The new-orders index was 50.5, slightly lower than the prior month but still above the expansion threshold. Raw-material inventories remained in contraction at 48.2, while the employment component also stayed below 50.
Business size showed a similar split. Large manufacturers recorded a PMI of 50.6. Medium-sized factories were at 49.7 and small firms at 48.9, meaning both groups remained in contraction despite improving from August.
What can and cannot be concluded
Reuters reported that easing weather disruptions and demand linked to the global artificial-intelligence buildout may have helped factory activity. Those are reported explanations, not conclusions established by the survey itself. Weak household consumption and property investment continue to complicate the broader economic picture.
The non-manufacturing index, covering services and construction, increased to 50.2 from 49.0. Together, the figures indicate improved momentum at the end of the third quarter, but one month above 50 is not proof of a sustained recovery.
The release adds to a week of major international economic updates. AskNovus also covered Australia’s September interest-rate decision.
