WASHINGTON — September 29, 2026. The U.S. General Services Administration and the White House’s National Design Studio launched America.gov, a new portal intended to help people find federal information and services through an AI-enhanced search interface.

GSA described the site as a digital “front door” to government resources in its September 29 launch announcement. The portal is designed to draw from information across federal websites and return conversational answers and links.

What the new portal does

America.gov lets visitors type questions instead of navigating agency-by-agency menus. The initial release is focused on discovery: helping users identify relevant programs, forms and official pages. The administration says later phases are expected to support more transactional tasks, such as applications and renewals, in 2027.

The launch does not eliminate existing agency websites, eligibility rules or application processes. People using the portal should still confirm deadlines, required documents and benefit details on the linked agency page before acting.

AI answers require verification

Generative systems can summarize large collections of information, but they can also produce incomplete or incorrect responses. Associated Press testing on launch day found that the chatbot’s answers to some political questions changed shortly after the site went public.

That episode underscores a practical rule: treat the conversational answer as navigation assistance, not the final authority. For consequential issues involving taxes, immigration, benefits, health, legal rights or filing dates, use the source link to verify the information with the responsible agency.

Privacy and access questions

The portal does not require an account for basic use, according to launch coverage. Users should nevertheless avoid entering sensitive personal information into a general-purpose question box unless the site clearly directs them to a secure, official form.

Accessibility, language coverage, accuracy and the transparency of corrections will be important measures of the project’s performance. A centralized interface is useful only if it consistently points people to authoritative information and makes uncertainty clear.

How to use it safely

  • Check that the address is exactly America.gov or another .gov domain.
  • Open the linked agency page before submitting information.
  • Verify dates and eligibility rules directly with the responsible agency.
  • Do not assume a chatbot response is a legal determination or benefits approval.

America.gov is part of a broader federal push to use AI in public services. For another recent federal-policy story, see AskNovus’s report on the Artemis Accords reaching 76 participating countries.
