3M has recalled about 53,634 Scotch thermal laminators after reports that the machines smoked, melted, overheated and, in five cases, caught fire.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday, October 15. It covers the Scotch model TL1302Z, a light gray and white laminator with gray accents, a roughly 13-inch-wide laminating slot and a carrying handle on the right side when viewed from the front.
How to identify the recalled laminator
- Brand: Scotch
- Model: TL1302Z
- Color: light gray/white with gray accents
- Where to find the model: on a sticker on the bottom of the laminator and on the product packaging
- Sales period: June 2024 through September 2026
- Retailer: Amazon.com
- Price: about $44 to $56
What consumers should do
Consumers should stop using and unplug the recalled laminator immediately. 3M is offering a full refund. The company’s recall process asks owners to confirm the product is included, cut the power cord while the laminator is unplugged, and upload a photograph showing the cut cord. The refund will be mailed by check after the form and photograph are reviewed.
Owners should follow local and state rules for electronics recycling when disposing of the machine. The CPSC says recalled products should not be resold or given away.
Incidents reported
3M received 63 reports involving smoking, melting or overheating. Five of those reports involved the laminators catching fire, and one involved minor property damage. No injuries had been reported when the recall was announced.
This is a distinct recall from the DR Power trimmer mower fire-hazard recall reported earlier in October.
