Updated October 11, 2026: Erie, Pennsylvania, police say a 45-year-old man killed eight people at a Perry Street home on Friday before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victims included a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a woman who was eight months pregnant.
Investigators have not identified a motive. Authorities said seven victims were related to the shooter and the eighth was a family friend. The gunfire had ended before officers entered the residence, according to information released by police and reported by national news organizations.
What police have established
Police were alerted shortly before 5 p.m. Friday by the city’s acoustic gunshot-detection system. Officers found two women dead outside. A drone and a robot were used before a tactical team entered the house, where six additional victims and the shooter were found.
Investigators recovered a .40-caliber handgun registered to the shooter. Video and audio evidence reviewed by authorities indicated that two women arrived while seeking help or trying to intervene and were shot outside. No shots were fired after officers arrived.
Investigation remains open
Police are reviewing phones and other evidence to determine what led to the killings. Officials have cautioned against circulating unverified claims about motive while that work continues.
The Erie County Coroner’s Office and city police are handling the death investigation. Mayor Daria Devlin said responding officers encountered an exceptionally traumatic scene, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro offered state support to the city.
