Dark storm clouds over Florida, illustrative of the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia flood threat

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Flood Watch covers parts of Northeast Florida and all of Southeast Georgia from noon Sunday, October 4, through Monday morning as forecasters warn that repeated downpours may overwhelm streams, roads and drainage systems.

The National Weather Service office in Jacksonville issued the watch at 1:22 a.m. EDT Sunday. The Florida portion includes Baker, Duval, Nassau, Hamilton and Columbia counties. The Georgia portion spans a broad area from the Okefenokee region to the Atlantic coast, including the Brunswick, Waycross and St. Simons Island areas.

What the watch means

A Flood Watch is not a statement that flooding is already occurring. It means conditions could support flooding during the valid period and that residents should be prepared to act if a warning is issued. The Jacksonville office said local rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible, especially where bands of rain repeatedly move over the same communities.

Soils in parts of the region are already wet, increasing the chance that additional rain will run off quickly. The Weather Service highlighted possible flooding of rivers, creeks and streams, along with urban and poor-drainage locations. Exact totals will vary sharply because the heaviest rain bands may be narrow and slow-moving.

Travel and coastal concerns

Drivers should avoid flooded roads and check conditions before traveling, particularly along low-lying routes and near small waterways. Water depth is difficult to judge at night, and a washed-out road may be hidden beneath the surface. Coastal and marine hazards may also increase later in the week, but those details remain subject to forecast changes.

This is a developing forecast, so residents should use the latest official alert rather than relying on a static summary. For broader context on another current rainfall threat, see AskNovus’ Lower Texas Coast flash-flood outlook.
