The Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers each took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five Division Series on Saturday, October 3.
The four games produced a near no-hitter in New York, a three-hit shutout in Cleveland, a three-homer Dodgers win in Atlanta and a late go-ahead blast for Milwaukee.
Rays 1, Yankees 0
Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning as Tampa Bay shut out New York. He struck out 10, walked two and worked eight innings. Austin Wells broke up the bid with a double with two outs in the eighth but was thrown out trying to reach third.
Jonathan Aranda supplied the only run with a solo home run. The Yankees were held to one hit in a postseason game for the first time in 447 playoff contests, according to MLB. Game 2 is Monday.
White Sox 3, Guardians 0
Chicago used five pitchers to combine on a three-hitter in Cleveland. Munetaka Murakami hit a two-run homer measured at 440 feet, giving the White Sox the decisive swing in their first postseason win of the series. Game 2 is Monday.
Dodgers 5, Braves 3
Los Angeles hit three home runs—one each from Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy—to win in Atlanta. Tarik Skubal allowed one run and two hits over six innings before the Braves made the final score closer with late offense that included an Ozzie Albies home run. Game 2 is Sunday.
Brewers 3, Padres 2
William Contreras hit the go-ahead homer in the seventh inning for Milwaukee. Jackson Chourio also homered, giving him five career postseason home runs—a Brewers franchise record. Game 2 is Sunday.
Series context
A Game 1 win is important, but each matchup remains a best-of-five series and no club advanced Saturday. The next games could change pitching availability and home-field pressure quickly.
The Brewers-Padres matchup follows San Diego’s Wild Card sweep of the Cubs. Tampa Bay’s opener came after New York’s Wild Card sweep of Boston.
