Historic educational building in Kyiv, Ukraine

A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district on Thursday, October 1, 2026, damaging the building while children and staff were in shelters. City officials reported no casualties.

The drone’s warhead did not explode, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko. Images from the scene showed a large hole in the building’s upper level, burn damage and shattered windows. Police and emergency crews removed drone fragments and the unexploded warhead.

Kyiv’s city government opened a dated incident page on October 1 to collect official updates from the attack.

What is confirmed about the school strike

The strike occurred during another period of air-raid alerts over the Ukrainian capital. The Associated Press reported October 1 that students and staff had reached shelters before impact.

No immediate casualties were reported at the school. The absence of casualties does not mean the device was harmless: the warhead failed to detonate, and specialists had to remove it from the damaged building.

Authorities did not immediately provide a full repair estimate or a timetable for reopening the school. Those details may change as engineers inspect the structure.

The attack followed a large strike on Ukraine’s power grid

The school incident came one day after Ukrainian officials described a major Russian attack on the country’s energy network. AskNovus covered that separate September 30 drone-and-missile assault on Ukraine’s power grid.

Officials did not report new energy-infrastructure damage in Kyiv from Thursday’s school strike. The two events should therefore be treated separately: Wednesday’s attack targeted the broader grid, while Thursday’s verified impact damaged an educational building.

Kyiv faces a changing drone threat

Ukraine has reported increasing use of fast, jet-powered drones that can reduce the time available for detection and interception. The AP said Ukrainian manufacturers are working on faster interceptors and other defenses, but development and deployment take time.

That broader trend provides context for the pressure on Kyiv’s air defenses, but officials have not publicly established every technical detail of the particular drone that hit the school. Claims about its exact model or launch site should be treated cautiously until investigators release more information.

Reuters Connect published verified emergency-service footage on October 1 showing firefighters, damage to the school and drone debris. The footage was supplied by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

What to watch next

The most important next updates are the school’s structural assessment, any revised casualty report and official information identifying the drone. Air-raid conditions can also change quickly, so residents should continue to rely on Ukrainian authorities and local alert systems for immediate safety information.
