NASHVILLE — September 29, 2026: Charles Kelley, a co-founder and lead vocalist of the country group Lady A, has publicly announced that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Kelley shared the diagnosis in a video recorded with his wife, Cassie. He said unexplained rib fractures led his doctor to order blood tests, which identified the disease.

The singer said he feels healthy and hopeful as he begins treatment. He also said he intends to continue working, including on Lady A’s upcoming music and scheduled holiday performances, while recognizing that some days may be difficult.

What Kelley disclosed

Kelley described the video as a health update and said that the diagnosis followed medical testing prompted by several rib fractures. He identified the condition as multiple myeloma and credited recent treatment advances with helping him approach the diagnosis with optimism.

His wife became emotional during the video as the couple discussed the news and their effort to maintain stability for their family. Kelley said that sharing the diagnosis publicly felt similar to his earlier decision to discuss his sobriety journey: speaking openly, he said, reduced some of the fear surrounding it.

Lady A bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood posted messages of support. Kelley did not announce that the band was ending or that all future appearances had been canceled.

What multiple myeloma is

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, multiple myeloma is a cancer involving plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow. When abnormal plasma cells multiply, they can crowd out cells that produce normal blood components.

The course of the disease and treatment can vary substantially by patient. Kelley’s public comments describe his own diagnosis and expectations; they should not be treated as medical guidance or a prediction for anyone else.

Neither Kelley nor the reporting outlets disclosed a detailed treatment protocol. AskNovus is therefore not inferring a stage, prognosis or medical timeline beyond what he chose to share publicly.

Plans to continue working

Kelley said the first months of treatment were not expected to prevent him from working entirely. Lady A has new music in development, and he referred to upcoming Christmas performances while explaining that staying active is important to him.

Those plans could change depending on his health and medical advice. As of the announcement, however, Kelley presented the diagnosis as a serious challenge he expects to address while remaining involved with the band.

Why the announcement is notable

Kelley has been part of Lady A since the group formed in 2006 with Scott and Haywood. The trio has released major country hits including “Need You Now” and has remained active as a touring and recording group.

The announcement is a confirmed public disclosure by the artist, not a report based on unnamed sources or speculation. People, Good Morning America and Entertainment Weekly reported the video and its key details.
