At a glance

  • Each team played three group-stage matches.
  • The top two teams in every group advanced.
  • The eight best third-place teams also reached the Round of 32.

The group stage

The 48 teams were divided into 12 four-team groups. Each team played the other three teams in its group once, producing 72 group-stage matches.

How 32 teams advanced

The first- and second-place finishers in all 12 groups claimed 24 knockout places. Eight more places went to the best third-place teams across the groups, creating a 32-team knockout bracket.

Why third-place comparisons mattered

A team could advance without finishing in the top two, so results across different groups had to be compared. Points came first, followed by the tournament’s published tiebreakers. That made final group matches important even when a team could no longer win its group.

The longer knockout path

The Round of 32 added an elimination round before the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final. A champion therefore had to navigate eight matches from the group stage through the title game.

What the expansion changed

The format gave more national teams access to the tournament and increased the event to 104 matches. It also created more bracket combinations and made third-place standings a regular part of the group-stage discussion.
