SAN FRANCISCO — September 29, 2026: OpenAI introduced Dots, a new class of always-on AI agents designed to carry ongoing responsibility across connected apps, at the company’s DevDay conference. It also began rolling out ChatGPT Space, a shared area where people, teams and agents can work with Pages and saved files.

OpenAI’s product documentation says a Dot can continue making progress between conversations, use connected apps, create files and delegate work to ChatGPT Work or Codex. Each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser, and users can review its work or redirect it.

What OpenAI says Dots can do

Examples include preparing meeting briefs, tracking project updates, revising a sales proposal as customer requirements change and building a software demo for review. Reuters reported that Dots use GPT-6 Astra and can also communicate through approved Slack and Microsoft Teams deployments.

The rollout is gradual and depends on plan, region and workspace settings. OpenAI’s documentation advises users to define what an agent may do independently. Reuters reported that changing passwords and permanently deleting data require explicit user consent, while organizations can add custom rules for when an agent must ask permission.

ChatGPT Space adds a shared work area

ChatGPT Space brings Pages and saved files together in a collaborative workspace. Where available, teammates can share a Page and call on ChatGPT or a Dot inside it. That changes the product from a sequence of one-off chats toward a persistent project environment.

The announcement is a product launch, not proof that every advertised workflow will perform reliably in all conditions. Reuters noted that voice-update demonstrations at the event encountered glitches, and availability varies. The safety controls are especially relevant after the AI safety commitments AskNovus reported earlier.
