ASKNOVUS BRIEF

A useful business plan is a decision tool, not a stack of optimistic predictions. It should explain who the customer is, what problem the business solves, how it will operate and what the numbers must look like to survive.

At a glance

  • Traditional and lean plans serve different needs.
  • Revenue assumptions should connect to price, customers and capacity.
  • Funding requests should state the amount, purpose and expected result.

Choose the right format

The SBA describes traditional and lean startup plans. A traditional plan usually contains more detail and may be expected by lenders. A lean plan can summarize the business model quickly and may work well for early testing.

Define the customer and problem

“Everyone” is rarely a useful target market. Identify who is most likely to buy, where those customers are, how they solve the problem today and why they would switch. Use market research rather than relying only on personal enthusiasm.

Connect operations to the numbers

List startup costs, monthly expenses, price, expected sales volume and cash needs. A business can show accounting profit and still run short of cash, so include the timing of payments, inventory purchases and seasonal slow periods.

Make the funding request specific

State how much money is needed, how it will be used and how the expense supports revenue or capacity. Lenders may also examine credit history, collateral, experience and the ability to repay.

Update the plan

A plan should change when actual results differ from assumptions. Compare sales, costs and customer behavior with the forecast, then revise the next steps. The goal is better decisions—not preserving an outdated document.
