The Walt Disney Company is laying off several hundred employees across its human-resources and technology departments, according to reports published Tuesday, September 29.
Reuters reported that a source familiar with the matter described the reduction as affecting a few hundred employees. Fox Business separately reported that hundreds of roles were being cut across the two functions. Disney had not publicly disclosed an exact number or issued a detailed statement in the reports reviewed by AskNovus.
The latest round follows earlier reductions
The September cuts follow several workforce reductions across Disney’s businesses. Reuters reported that the company eliminated about 1,000 positions in April in marketing, studios and television, ESPN, products and technology, and some corporate functions. The company also made several hundred cuts in film and television marketing, publicity, casting and development in an earlier round.
Disney employed approximately 231,000 people at the end of fiscal 2025, according to Reuters, including about 172,000 in the United States and 59,000 outside the country. The newly reported cuts therefore represent a limited share of the company’s total workforce, but they affect central corporate functions used across a large entertainment portfolio.
Leadership and industry context
Josh D’Amaro became Disney’s chief executive in March 2026. Since then, the company has made several senior-management changes while navigating streaming competition, changes in moviegoing and the growing use of artificial intelligence in media and technology operations.
The reports do not establish that any one of those factors alone caused the September layoffs. They do show that the workforce changes are part of a broader sequence of cost and organizational adjustments at a company spanning film, television, streaming, sports, consumer products and theme parks.
The development arrives amid continued consolidation and restructuring across major media companies. AskNovus has also reported on the court approval process for the Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.
